Principal’s Welcome

School Principal

Katherine High School was established in 1989 and since that time has made a significant contribution to the Katherine community. Many of our students have excelled academically and have gone on to pursue occupations in a variety of professions, with a number of these students returning to Katherine to establish businesses and contribute further to our community.

Our school focus is based on three guiding principles – Trust, Honesty and Respect. We place emphasis on the right of students to learn and the right of teachers to teach. Many of our teaching staff are outstanding teachers in their specialist areas. Over a third of our staff have post graduate qualifications, many have a unique outlook on education having worked in both the private and public sectors, and several have been recognised formally as outstanding teachers in their field.

The student body have access to a variety of learning opportunities, ranging from an academic, traditional program (with outstanding success rates) through to catering for employment options in our Pathways Program. Extracurricular opportunities abound, whether in the sporting field or in the performing arts. The school undertakes a number of interstate trips, as well as at least one overseas trip per annum.

The school is also supported by both the Clontarf Academy and the Stars Foundation, adding a unique feature.

A further feature of our school is the diversity of the student body. With over 690 students currently enrolled, students are attracted to our school from all parts of the Territory. Over 30 different clan groups are represented in the school, together with a mixture of students from a range of overseas countries. 61% of our students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and approximately 60% of our students speak 2 languages. Our school also attracts a number of students whose parents are on deployment to the local RAAF base, Tindal, located 25 km south of Katherine.
